Matt Jones, Joiner and Craftsman
Born in Basingstoke, I have strong roots in Southampton and now happily live and work here.
A history of fine woodwork and resourcefulness runs through my family, some of which I have been fortunate enough to pick up. My father was always making wooden toys, my grandfather was an engineer and keen garage woodworker, my great grandfather was a carpenter and he apprenticed with his father, a master craftsman who left a legacy of beautiful carved woodwork in Hampshire Churches.
My work is a rediscovery of discarded ideas. I hand-work and finish as much as possible, have an unhealthy obsession with using reclaimed timber and use only sustainable sources of virgin wood if that has to be the case.
Lastly, attention to detail is the most important thing. Good quality is created by a combination of hundreds of small details finished with care. It’s a demanding way to make furniture but I hope you will agree the finished product is worth the effort.
Best wishes, Matt
